This is a story of an evil local witch that once cast a shadow over the local people and is the first story that I wrote for Badenoch the Storylands .
It’s a wonderful story that appears in two local story collections ‘Legends of Badenoch’ and also ‘Legends of the Cairngorms’ by Affleck Grey (the Grandfather of local Kingussie Shinty historian John Robertson). The former was compiled and printed by local printers the Johnson Brothers of Kingussie who also published the local paper the Badenoch Herald. The stories were originally collected from locals by a Kingussie man called Malcolm MacPherson sometime early in the early 20th century.
It is so special that someone from the area has collected these local treasures. Nuide is a large local farm, across the river Spey from Newtonmore. It has a strong Clan MacPherson heritage as it was the birthplace of the legendary clan chief Cluny Macpherson of the 1745 Jacobite uprising. It’s still a prominent local working farm today, and you can spot it from the A9 motorway as you head south of Kingussie and before the Newtonmore turn-off.
