I wrote a suite or medley of music for 92 year old railwayman Jimmy Gray for the railway album. The first melody was a slow air that I wanted to hear Patsy Reid play on fiddle - so she features on my re-recording of the tune. In fact she plays viola on it here - which somehow echoes Jimmy’s voice. This tune has a partner, the tune I wrote for Jimmy’s wife Helen, called Helen’s Song, which Patsy and I re-recorded for the Iron Horse as we’ve so enjoyed playing it live together. It’s quote apt that the violin is played on Helen’s one while the viola is on Jimmy’s. I felt as if it was meant to be that way. Jimmy’s tune is an overture for the Iron Horse and is reprised at the end in the epic “Memories of a Highland Railwayman’. I knew I had to open and close the Iron Horse with this tune, in honour of Jimmy for all the great railway stories he told me.
