about

Thank you to Ross Noble the brilliant Badenoch storyteller for this one. I borrowed it from ‘Stitches in Time’, a collection of tales produced by ’Society of Badenoch & Strathspey, David Ritchie, Jane Bregazzi and several local school children. I used to listen to Ross at Highland Folk Museum days when he sat about his make-shift fire, with us children listening beady-eyed to his tales of 'Jack and the Caldron' and such like! Amazing folk stories. My mother would be at these open days singing and playing the harp, Rob Ritchie (aka The Legend) would be demonstrating Highland Games on the field, and there would be a colourful jester juggling and doing various other tricks!

Piping in Badenoch is famous. This is the home of Malcolm MacPherson aka 'Calum Piobhair’ - arguably the greatest piper and piping teacher of all time. His sons were great award-winning pipers too. Then there were great piping tutors that came later: Dr.Kenneth Mackay (Laggan School of Piping) and David Taylor (who taught pipes to the great Martyn Bennett).

The Minigaig Pass is an ancient path leading over the hills between Glen Tromie in Badenoch to Blair Atholl. It’s rough in places and a very long walk! It’s popular with mountain bikers.
