about

This is a sample of a Stanier Class 5 4-6-0, commonly known as the Black Five steam locomotive. In terms of the other types of steam engine available at the time in the Highlands, they were incredibly versatile. They were used for passengers and freight, they were called hikers because they could endure the most brutal hill climbs of the Highland railways. Jimmy Gray said “a lovely, lovely engine”

After the Railway album was complete I had a huge bank of field recordings that were unused. Steam trains have great natural great rhythm - or UN-natural great rhythm, and what an epic orchestral performance they make as they roll by - emerging from silence, then filling the day with synchronized huffs and puffs and clattering, and eventually in their wake leaving us in ponderous silence. They have conductors too!
