THE RAILWAYMAN (suite) [H Napier]

13. Part I 00 57 The Railwayman Air
14. Part II 01 58 March of the Bairns
15. Part III 02 55 The Fireman / The Driver / The Railwayman March

The Railwayman Parts I, II & III track Jimmy Gray's career on the railways. The music is a theme and variation, with the opening melody changing into a series of popular Scottish ceilidh dance tune-types: the opening waltz becomes a Canadian Barn Dance, a Highland Schottische and Dashing White Sergeant, finishing with The Gay Gordons.

“I had a good life. Enjoyed every minute of it. I was always keen and conscientious,” says Jimmy. “In early January 1941, the war was on...the locomotive clerk comes up here one night to the house and says ‘would you like to start on the railway?’ So there was five of us boys started that Monday morning, all classmates, we were all 16 and in school together. We were a' took down to the store, kitted out with the dungarees, big black jacket, and of course the bonnet...the bonnet was the main thing, with the polish top, we thought we were really 'with it' you know? ...and we were right on the footplate right away. There was no messing about with cleaning engines...you were just a fireman right away...passed out within weeks and you were a fireman...we learned the hard way you know!”
