about

The sound of male Capercaillies at dawn during the breeding season.

The capercaillie (Scottish Gaelic), ‘The Horse of the Woods’, is an otherworldly creature. The male birds are as giant as they are cantankerous, famed for their clicks and pops and flutter jumps at the ‘lek’ during mating season. With Egyptian eye liner, a Japanese fan tail, velvet green neck plumage and a fierce hooked beak they fly through Scots pine wood canopy with all the grace of a cannonball. Capercaillies have been known to take on foes several times their own size, including stationary Land Rovers.
