The message that I wrote to its commissioner Tom Lee:

Hi Laurie. Hamish Napier here - a composer and folk musician from the Scottish Highlands. This tune is a gift for you, from Tom.

Tom and I became acquainted in 2020 through the' COVID Celidh' series on social media by our friend Duncan Chisholm, the great Highland fiddle player from Beauly, near Loch Ness. Tom told me of your visit to our country in 2018 and how much it meant to both of you. There was a moment on your trip Tom especially mentioned. He described a walk you took one summer’s evening in Inverness. He described the play of light on the River Ness and the music from Eden Court Theatre. He told me how much he loved you, and how that evening that new place seemed to signal a new phase in your life together.

The tune is called ‘Riverness’ - for the river that flows from the mighty Loch Ness itself. But 'Riverness' is a new noun I’ve created for this piece, meaning a feeling of contentedness while walking along the banks of a beautiful river.

Thank you Laurie and Tom for allowing me to enter into your story with one of my own. I hope you both return soon and visit us in the Cairngorm Mountains. Happy 32nd anniversary Tom and Laurie Lee!”
